Previous generations believed that certain dietary choices (e.g. sweets and dairy products) could cause acne. In our time, however, experts know more about the factors that trigger it and of course we now also know how to deal with it.

Myth busted

While diet can to some extent affect the condition, the main cause of most cases of acne is hormonal imbalances. Hormones stimulate sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, which in turn clogs the pores. Bacteria then develop within the pores, causing inflammation and acne breakouts. This happens during periods of major hormonal change, regardless of our dietary choices.

Although hormonal imbalances that cause acne are more common during the teenage years, they can also affect adults. Women typically experience hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause, which result in acne breakouts. Acne can also be a side effect of certain medications, and there are people who have a genetic predisposition to it (a study found that 50% of adults with acne had a parent, sibling or child with the same skin condition).

What is the appropriate treatment?

This depends on many factors: your age, gender, how severe your acne is and how long it has been bothering you, among others. If over-the-counter treatments, such as a topical retinoid or products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, combined with gentle cleansing do not work (it may take 4-12 weeks to see improvement in skin condition), you should consult a dermatologist for help. Remember that severe acne requires aggressive treatment to prevent scarring.

Did you know that…

People with darker skin types are more likely to experience complications compared to people with lighter skin tones. More specifically, acne scars can remain on the skin for a long time after treatment and even when the acne subsides, the affected skin may be darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (depigmentation) than before the condition appeared.

The 6 steps towards flawless skin

Choose a cleanser specifically designed for acne. These products usually contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, which help eliminate acne marks.

Cleanse your face gently, as harsh movements can worsen acne or cause scarring. Use only your hands as anything else can irritate your skin.

If you need to use a moisturizing cream, use one with a light texture that won’t worsen your acne. Choose oil-free moisturizers that contain antibacterial agents for acne-prone skin. This type of product is the best choice for you.

Don’t forget sun protection. Since many acne products can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, it is important to apply sunscreen daily. A product with hyaluronic acid will soothe and at the same time hydrate your skin.

If you wear makeup use an oil-free foundation. Heavy makeup or other cosmetic products that clog pores can cause acne flare-ups.

Never pick at your spots. This can lead to further inflammation and possible scarring.

[140

post-1576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-skin-care
["GET
